Our History
Joe and Laura met at a dog show and formed an instant bond over dogs. Since then they have worked together with their respective breeds, both co-owning and competing. Joe is the owner of Modern Family Standards and Laura is the owner of Scottland Kennels and they have come together in a partnership to offer purposely bred, healthy puppies, and services.

We also know that if you are looking to add a new best friend (new puppy) to your family, finding the right puppy and knowing how to navigate the process of adopting a puppy can be confusing, and scary especially if it’s your first time.

Meet Joe
Hi there! I’m Joe, a native of South Carolina.
Raised with dogs all my life, I’ve always believed that we can all use a furry best friend in our family home. And that belief held true for me and my family when we went to find the perfect dog for our family.
By going through the process of trying to find our new family, furry addition, over the past few years I’ve taken a special interest in breeding and showing Miniature Poodles and other dogs and have been active in this breed for the past 5 years.
To date I’ve had the opportunity to compete in numerous UKC Multi-Colored Poodle champions and Grand Champions and many AKC Miniature Poodle Champions.
I also had the honor to serve in the National Guard and complete an education in nursing. And to share a little fun fact, I’ve also been a goat judge, which gave me the opportunity to travel to many different states to judge goat shows.
Today I dedicate my time to running our family business - Modern Family Standards where we help multi-colored, AKC miniature poodles, and Miniature Longhaired Dachshunds to find their forever homes with the right family.
My day job includes working as an administrator for a company that provides hospice care. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my husband and three kids in good ol South Carolina.
Meet Laura
Hello there! I’m Laura and I am a native of Virginia.
My parents owned and operated Scottland, a 2nd generation kennel where they raised Brittanys and other pointing breeds.

Over the years they competed in AKC and American Field pointing dog trials regularly. As a young girl, I became active in conformation shows and pointing breed field trials and hunting tests.
​
My father revamped his interest in deer hunting, so we purchased our first Treeing Walker and Bluetick Coonhounds. Since then, Scottland has consistently had coonhounds in the top 5 conformation dogs in the country.
​
As for me, I continued my love of pet grooming in 2003, where I worked for one of the largest pet chains in the country. My experience stems from over 20 years of professional grooming and obedience training with great interest in helping dogs advance in their delivery and overall development.
I have earned several certifications including a Certificate of Merit for the first Bavarian Mountain Scenthound and Porcelaine Hound in the United States, and the Canine Good Citizen and AKC Star Puppy Evaluator Certificate.

Today I continue to compete in AKC shows with my Treeing Walker and Bluetick Coonhounds, along with my client's dogs. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my two rescue thoroughbreds, Indy Fire and Cocoa Puff.
